Embracing My Own Style

I’ve always thought I just had no style. I almost never like the outfits I throw together – every now and again I find an outfit I love and wear it again and again.

It turns out with the event of Pinterest, I do have a style. I know what I like. I just don’t ever spend the money to buy it, or have a notion enough to look for it secondhand. I’m sort of excited to find that I know what I like and what I don’t like. From pinning this and that, here’s what I’ve discovered.

I love ruffles and feminine touches. I love rich colors like turquoise and purple as well as gray and black mixed in.

I’m crazy about cardigans, which work well with my figure, and about funky flats. (I don’t wear heels much because of my back; and after my chiropractor visit today I am wondering if I ever should again.)

And I really like some floral touches here and there.

I’m kind of excited to know this, finally: I DO HAVE STYLE!! It’s just hidden under a lack of funds (which is no excuse for the creative!) and lazyness.

Do you have any key fall pieces you’re itching to get? Right now I’m hoping to find a few gorgeous cardigans to add to a couple I have and love, a good jacket, a some fun necklaces, and a nice pair of gray flats.

Ode to Dillard’s Lingerie Department

Just slightly over seven years ago, I was trying to find lingerie for my honeymoon. I was virginal in the most literal way; frankly, the thought of anyone – even my soon-to-be-husband – seeing me without my clothes on seemed utterly frightening.

After one short trip, I realized lingerie shopping with my mom was about as comfortable as eating a banana peel (sorry, Mom, you know I love you, but it’s true). So I ventured out to Ye Olde Victoria’s Secret all by my lonesome.

I felt like I tried on everything in the store to no avail. Apparently there just aren’t a lot of double D-women shopping there for untrashy lingerie. My chest ranneth over.

I’m thinking all this medieval language is my way of making talking about lingerie shopping not embarassing for myself, by the way.

The tears I fought started to spill until I reached the depths of Dillard’s department store. It was like angels started singing as the kindest women I had ever met sought out for me the perfect honeymoon ensembles. I told them the absolute truth and they catered to my every need. I just remember the ache of relief I felt as I left, bags in hand. I could have hugged all of the saleswomen.

Flash forward, oh, seven years and a few weeks. I am once again dealing with My Least Favorite Part of Breastfeeding. For the better part of a year I’ve been battling bras. I try them on. They don’t fit. I order online, which is just about the only place I can find my size. They don’t fit.

Yesterday in Kohl’s, I started to cry. Is there seriously no one else in America with a large chest who’d like to be able to try on her undergarments before purchasing them? I don’t think I’m that much of an anomaly. I mean, really!

Stifling the tears, I saw a mall Dillard’s across the road. I decided to make one last stop.

And you know what? Those same tears welled back up as I saw THEY HAD BIG CUP SIZES. Like, more than one style. Many. Not only that, the sweetest saleswoman I’ve encountered in over seven years came to my side and blessed me with her kind spirit and helpful hands.

I guess this is all to say, thank you Dillard’s. Thank you for stocking items you might not sell all the time just for women like me. I hereby pledge allegiance to your lingerie department. You rock.

And you should give Elayne at the Valley Hills Mall a raise.

Frugal Fashion

Jen is having one of her Frugalista Fashion Shows today, so I thought I would share with you some recent thrift-store finds. (Even if that means I have to share pictures of myself …)

SNV30262

I found this skirt at Goodwill the other night as they were closing. It was $4! When I got to the register they told me they had JUST put it out. I love the fun pattern but I really need a black cardigan or something to wear on top.

This shirt was new from Ann Taylor LOFT, so I know it wasn’t frugal. But I’ve had it for a good 4 years–and I think my mom bought it for me anyway. ;)

My Nine West shoes were found at Marti and Liz, which sells store cast-offs for cheaper.

My necklace is from The Vintage Pearl–but I won it from a blog giveaway!

SNV30263

Same Goodwill trip, I picked up this cute Christopher and Banks sweater for $6. I love red! The jeans are my same Vigoss ones I found at a small thrift store last year for $7. (And the only jeans I have that I like, sadly.)

SNV30264

And my cute new boots came last week from One Stop Plus, where a coupon code helped me score them for $17. They are SO comfy and warm!

Same trip, I also picked up an Austin and Ashley dress for Libbie for $2.50. As far as I can tell, their clothes retail for $30-$50 new!

I will say it pains me a little bit to show you pictures of myself. But I don’t think I look too bad for 5 and a half weeks postpartum.

Any good thrift store finds for you lately?

Cyber Monday: Get a Great Discount on Amazing E-Books at Heavenly Homemakers

If you look at my menu plans, it’s no secret that I LOVE Heavenly Homemakers. Laura is one of the most genuine, funny, down-to-earth bloggers, and I read her site often. I even wrote a feature article on her and her family for the November 2010 issue of ParentLife

Part of Laura’s ministry is the writing of many affordable e-books on whole foods cooking, homeschooling, and hospitality.

Until midnight tonight (11/29) you can use the code PINKFRIDAY to get 25% off anything in her shop! Woohoo! If anyone wanted to buy me a crocheted Swiffer cover, I wouldn’t complain. ;)

____

We’re also giving away 19 items at the ParentLife blog and you have until tomorrow morning to enter. Great music and books! Just comment! Please!

I do make a small commission if you buy something from the Heavenly Homemakers store by clicking one of my links. Just as an FYI. But my love for her is completely sincere and I’ve been reading her blog for years.

Things I Love Thursday: Magazines

I am a total magazine junky. Seriously. As much as I love reading books, sometimes you just need to settle in with a magazine and let your brain digest in small pieces. At one time or another, I’ve subscribed to all of these magazines:

Family Fun
Working Mother
Shape
Cooking Light
Gourmet (sadly shut down)
The New Yorker
Southern Living
American Baby
Woman’s Day
All You
Kiwi
Parents
Better Home & Gardens
And Mr. V gets the ESPN Magazine

Woman's Day

Insane, right? Of course, I didn’t get them all at the same time … at least, I don’t think so.

I often let magazines pile up, but I find a time to read through them. I even have an ingenious filing system for magazine ideas and recipes that I want to hold onto.

I’ve just renewed Cooking Light, which has got to be my favorite magazine of all time. I have a lot of the Cooking Light annual cookbooks. I’m also very addicted to Family Fun and Southern Living right now. They have such fantastic ideas! (Family Fun has a lot of their crafts and recipes on their site, too–follow the link in this paragraph for the site.)

Amazon is running some wonderful deals on magazines right now, if you’re looking for a new one to check out.

Crochet Today!

Marie Claire is $8/24 months.
Parents is $12/24 months.
Crochet Today is $18/24 months (crochet magazines are VERY pricey in craft stores, this is a good deal)

There are a lot of other great deals running where you can get 2 years for the price of 1. I love how Amazon breaks it down so you can see the cost per issue–because sometimes it’s really NOT better to get the subscription than to buy it on the stand.

What’s your absolute favorite magazine?

Things I Love Thursday: Toddler Bikinis!

I don’t know if it’s because I’ve never been able to wear a two-piece.

Or because I’m dreaming of spending each weekday of the summer lounging at the pool (of the school where Mr. V works).

Maybe it’s just ’cause my girl is so ding-dang cute and I can’t wait to see her in something with a ruffly bottom and/or fake flowers. Or animal print.

But the last few days I’ve just been ga-ga over these precious toddler bathing suits. I won’t rush Spring … but I’m looking forward to the summer!

I do realize, however, this means I have to put on a bathing suit, too. Agh.

First two suits: Gymboree. Third: Babies R Us. Fourth: Children’s Place.

I love dressing my precious girl, so I’m linking to Things I Love Thursday at (my dear sisterchick’s blog) The Diaper Diaries.

Whole Foods in a Hurry: Week 3–Budgeting

Photobucket

Disclaimer: This post included Amazon affiliate links.

Although I’ve collected a few items from my grocery list here and there (whole wheat gnocchi from Amazon, canned beans from Aldi), spending the amount of money needed for cooking a whole months of whole foods has scared me and thus I’ve avoided doing much shopping.

The last (and only) time I did once-a-month cooking, Meredith did all the shopping and I wrote her a check. Have I mentioned that I love her? It was easy-peasy. So far on this adventure, it’s all me. No partner. Eeek.

There aren’t a whole lot of coupons out there for organics and the kind of foods I’m trying to find: whole fruit and vegetables, hormone-free meat, and so forth. (They DO exist. Here’s a great article on finding them.) And since I’m fairly new at this whole foods endeavor, I just don’t know what the cost will be.

So I went on an informational trip to our local health-food store, Greenlife, Monday afternoon. I wanted to investigate prices on meat, dairy products, and bulk items.

I was very happy to find bone-in chicken thighs for $1.99/lb. I bought eight for the Sweet Aromatic Chicken, which for us will make two dinners.* I skinned them and trimmed some fat off before separating them into Ziploc gallon freezer bags and going ahead and freezing them. On my cooking day, I won’t let them thaw; I will just mix the other ingredients and dump them on top of the chicken in the bags.

The least expensive ground beef I could find was $5.99/lb. It is, however, grass-fed and local beef, which made me happy. I am going to try it out this week for the Cheddar Ranch Burgers and see how I like it as compared to conventional. I am still undecided on whether I will buy this beef or the hormone-free GreenWise beef from Publix.

Wholesome Sweeteners Fair Trade Organic Sucanat (Brown Sugar), 16-Ounce Pouches (Pack of 12)

The one thing that I was thrilled to find was sucanat for $1.79/lb in the bulk bins. Sucanat is non-refined cane sugar and often touted by Heavenly Homemakers, Jo-Lynne, and Naturally Knocked Up. While no sugar is good or especially nutritious, sucanat is at least not refined. The only place I had ever seen it was on Amazon, where you have to buy 12 pounds for $42.46, making it $3.54/lb. Buying less than a pound for a little more than a dollar and a half made me much less intimidated to try it out!

I am still working things out monetarily. I am hoping to spend less than $200, since our budget for grocery and household items is $240/month. I do fiercely believe, though, that eating a whole foods diet will decrease doctor bills and prevent disease, so I am willing to trade other “wants” for this “need.” We’ll see what it all works out to and I’ll be sure to tell you! I am still positive it will be less than cooking this type of food week-to-week.

It does make me wish for a chest or extra freezer to store a half cow in, as many people have. One reader told me buying it this way she has a whole freezer of beef for $3/lb–all cuts, grass-fed. Unfortunately I have absolutely no where to put an extra freezer right now and so we will make do with what we have!

Stay tuned next week for the recipe documents and instruction list! (EEEEK!)

Did you miss a week? Here’s Part 1: Why? and Part 2: The Menu.

The time for submitting your freezer menus to Once a Month Mom is up, but you can still compete in the Cook-Off if you want to win some awesome prizes!

*The recipe calls for 8 thighs for one batch. We will be quadrupling this base recipe because in my mind 8 thighs feed 4 people. Since we only have two adults in our house, though, I just did 4 thighs per recipe for us.

Give It to Goodwill

Does everyone have those clothes they simply cannot seem to give away? Some items you cling to even though they are two sizes away, or totally impractical, or you will just never ever wear again?

Once upon a time, I had a gift card or a really good coupon to Ann Taylor LOFT. (I really love their clothes, but I’ve always been a little hippy for them.) I loved this dress. Oh, how I loved it. It’s a size 12. The last time I wore I size 12, I was 13. Seriously. But as I remember, they didn’t have it in a 14 so I bought it anyway.

At the time, with a very good “tummy” (our family code word for girdle) and a scarf to cover up the cleavage, it was cute.

Thirty pounds and a child later, it feels highly unlikely that it will ever fit again. But I can’t seem to give up hope. It was a $75 dress and I just can NOT give it away!

Oh, sweet jean jacket. For years, I wanted to be one of the cool kids and wear a jean jacket. Because in 1993 I was not anywhere near cool and had not even purchased my first pair of jeans, nevertheless an awesome, acid-washed, boxy denim jacket.

I wore this jacket all the time in the year or two before I got pregnant. And then, ahem, the bosoms grew. And I nursed for 11 months. And I never really lost all my baby weight (yet). My body is simply shaped differently, and the jacket is not what it used to be.

But I can’t seem to put it in the Goodwill pile.

I will gladly proclaim that this dress is NEVER going to Goodwill. I will carry it around with me from house to house until the day I die. It was custom-made for me in China, where I studied abroad for 6 weeks in the summer of 2002.

Seriously, it took about 10 trips to the seamstress in a different part of Beijing to finally secure this dress in an appropriate size. Because I am not an itty bitty Chinese woman, it’s really not that attractive on me. But it is luxurious, lined in silk, and makes me remember those crazy taxi rides with my friend Danny. It makes me think of being in a boat on the lake of the Summer Palace in Beijing, still one of my favorite places in the entire world.

Do you have clothes like this that you can’t/won’t give away?

Into the Deep

She gives everything hugs.

Blankets, dolls, a toy piano, her daddy. She cuddles everything close to her. She’ll even tuck her doll in with a blanket and pat him.

Her wide-mouth giggles when we tickle her make me giddy. She likes to try to tickle back, which makes me laugh even harder. Her nose crinkles, as it has since she was mere months old, and I can’t help but draw her close to me.

When it seems that my heart cannot hold any more, I see her smile, her serious thinking “fishy” face, even a pout, and I fall deeper in love.

_______________

I bought new jeans on Tuesday night. My new stay-at-home gig and Blissdom coming up and those still hanging around pounds were all demanding a classy pair of denim I could wear all the time. My most recent favorite pair I managed to get bleach on, and they’re also losing buttons. While there’s no way I will stop wearing them, I thought something slightly less worn would be nice for the conference.

I was thrilled to find some nice, dark, comfortable jeans Tuesday night at Ross for cheap.

Yesterday morning, Mom, Libbie, and I went to Panera for lunch. Walking from the car to the restaurant, I tripped, carrying Libbie, and landed hard on my right knee. And tore my brand-new jeans the first time I wore them.

_____________

It seems that I’m always falling lately. No control, I lay back and let life carry me. To the concrete, to the deep place in my heart, to a new city.

I fall.
