Mr. V has informed me that football season starts Saturday. He has no interest in NFL; college football is where it’s at for him (and the rest of SEC country). Our allegiances lie with Vanderbilt and Richmond, of course.
I’m sure it wouldn’t take much guessing to surmise that I don’t care a lick about football. I prefer if our teams win, of course, because it makes Mr. V happy and is good for our alumni associations! Our dear Richmond Spiders won the championship two years ago, and we’re very proud of that.
For me, Saturdays full of football mean Fall and FOOD! I actually enjoy puttering around the house, cleaning and running errands, while Mr. V cheers for whatever team is on ESPN that Saturday. While I don’t watch the games, I love the excitement that travels around SEC-land.
My in-laws are coming in town for Labor Day and I thought it might be fun to have a football-themed party for the occasion. Sure, it’s still 80 degrees + here every day–but that feels cool compared to the 100s!
Football Party Menu
Hot Crab Dip – this recipe makes 20 servings, so we’ll definitely be cutting it down for our small affair!
Antipasto Dip with pita chips – one of my favorite-ever appetizers
Jamie’s Chili – what says fall and football like a big bowl of chili?
Kickoff Cake – I will just make a regular cake and then use the toppings from this Kraft recipe. Cute!
Do you have any favorite football recipes? I couldn’t have a party menu without linking to my Mexican Corn Dip, the dip of all dips. Broccoli and Cheese Soup would be a good alternative to chili if you’re vegetarian or just want something a little lighter!

I have been making these oven ham sammies for a lot of parties: http://dineanddish.net/2009/08/impressing-the-in-laws-recipe-oven-ham-sammies/. The rolls are the perfect "snacky" size. Rave reviews and never one left. I'm telling you.
I made these for our Super Bowl party earlier this year: http://littlebitthisnthat.blogspot.com/2010/03/reuben-appetizers.html. If you like reubens…
Hmmm, this makes it look like I just like meat, bread and cheese. I usually have a diverse menu, but this is what I thought of off the top of my head!
We, too, are college football people. SEC people, actually! Well, my husband played football for Kansas, so he's Big 12…but we're college people. Thank you for the recipes, we're having friends over this weekend and I was ready to throw Doritos at them
We're looking forward to football season here too (Michigan is the school we root for). Like you, I'm more about the snacking than the watching, but it makes the husband so happy, it's contagious. Really looking forward to it. I might have to try that neat cake!
Pigs in blankets, boiled peanuts, Lay's Potato Chips (always Lay's), chips and salsa, and possibly popcorn are always on our football food menu.
Can't wait for next weekend when Auburn starts! Should be a fun season!
Big 10 all the way!!! GO BLUE!!! (University of Michigan)
I was gonna say—you better link to that magically delicious corn dip!!
